What is an OBD GPS tracker?

An OBD tracker receives power through the vehicle’s OBD-II diagnostic port. On compatible vehicles, installation is simply a matter of locating the port and plugging the tracker into it.

What is a hardwired GPS tracker?

A hardwired tracker connects to a suitable permanent live supply and ground within the vehicle. It can be positioned discreetly and is intended to remain with the vehicle.

Hardwired trackers are a good choice when:

• You want the tracker concealed as part of a discreet, permanent installation.
• You do not need to move the tracker regularly.
• The vehicle does not have a suitable OBD-II port.
• You want to leave the diagnostic port available.
• You want installation options beyond a simple plug-in connection.

Hardwiring takes more effort at the beginning, but that is often the reason for choosing it: the tracker becomes a fixed part of the vehicle rather than an accessible plug-in device. This can be preferable for long-term ownership, working vehicles and fleet installations.

For basic tracking, the GT1 only needs its red permanent-live and black ground connections. Its additional wires support optional functions such as ignition detection and correctly installed remote immobilisation.

Choose the GT1 when concealment and flexible positioning are the priorities.

GT2: simple two-wire battery installation

The GT2 GPS Vehicle Tracker mounts directly to the vehicle battery and requires two connections: red positive and black negative. Its compact, water-resistant design makes it particularly suitable for straightforward engine-bay installation.

Choose the GT2 when you want the simplest hardwired installation directly at the vehicle battery.

GT3: protected for more demanding installations

The GT3 GPS Vehicle Tracker is an IP67-rated hardwired tracker designed for installations where greater protection from water and dust is important. It also includes a larger 1,800 mAh internal backup battery that can keep it operating temporarily if the main power supply is interrupted.

For basic tracking, the GT3 can also be installed using only its red permanent-live and black ground connections. It supports additional inputs, outputs and accessories when more advanced functions are required.

Professional installation is recommended when using those advanced connections or its remote-immobilisation capability.

Choose the GT3 for more demanding environments or when you need its added protection, backup power and installation flexibility.

Do hardwired trackers need professional installation?

That depends on the vehicle, the chosen installation location and the connections you want to use.

GT1, GT2 and GT3 can all provide basic tracking using only their red power and black ground cables. The GT1 can be concealed wherever a suitable permanent live supply and ground are available. The GT2 is designed for a straightforward connection at the vehicle battery. The GT3 can also use a basic two-wire connection when its advanced inputs and outputs are not required.

Customers who are not confident working with vehicle electrics should ask a competent auto electrician to install the tracker. Professional installation is recommended for additional connections and features such as remote immobilisation. Any tracker must be installed safely, securely and in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements.
